Personal conveyance vs. yard moves

Choose the right special category and handle a missed selection honestly.

LESSON 1 / 2 · Keep personal travel and yard work separate

Keep personal travel and yard work separate

Understand the purpose and clock effect of each category.

Two categories with different purposes

Personal conveyance is qualifying personal travel while off-duty. A yard move (YM) is qualifying work-related movement in a restricted yard, recorded as on-duty not driving. The carrier must enable the relevant category.

YM does not use the eleven-hour driving allowance, but it adds to cycle hours. The ordinary fourteen-hour window keeps running. YM interrupts off-duty rest because it is work.

Compare these categories by purpose, location, duty status, and effect on the clocks.

Special-category effects
CategoryDuty statusEffect on ordinary rest and clocks
Personal conveyanceOff duty when qualifyingNo driving/on-duty hours; an existing ordinary window still runs
Yard moveOn-duty not driving when qualifyingAdds cycle hours; window runs; interrupts rest

A slow or short public-road trip is not a yard move. Check that the yard and movement qualify before selecting YM.

A yard task interrupts rest
