ELD malfunctions & diagnostics

Know when to reconstruct records, use paper, and escalate repair.

LESSON 2 / 2 · Maintain a record while the ELD is repaired

Maintain a record while the ELD is repaired

Know the driver’s fallback duties and the carrier’s repair deadline.

Keep recording during a malfunction

For an ELD malfunction, note the problem and notify the carrier in writing within twenty-four hours. Reconstruct the current day and previous seven days on compliant paper logs unless those records are already available or retrievable.

Continue manual RODS as required until the ELD is back in compliance. Use accurate available records to reconstruct missing periods. Do not invent a replacement history.

Keep recording while meeting the separate written-reporting and repair deadlines.

Verify the repair

Check that recording and required data work again. Keep the manual logs and malfunction report. For a transfer-only issue, follow the instructions for that specific failure; do not assume all duty data was lost.
