ELD malfunctions & diagnostics

Know when to reconstruct records, use paper, and escalate repair.

LESSON 1 / 2 · Assess the effect of a device warning

Assess the effect of a device warning

Separate troubleshooting from a failure that needs recording fallback.

Diagnostics and malfunctions are different

A diagnostic event flags a data or device inconsistency. A malfunction means a defined ELD compliance failure has occurred. Power, engine connection, time, location, recording, and transfer each have specific criteria. Follow the provider’s instructions for the event shown.

First check whether required activity is accurate, retained, and available. A brief warning that clears is not proof that data was lost. It is also not proof that every entry is intact.

Identify what failed before choosing the response.

Recording and transfer can fail separately

Check what failed
SituationWhat to assess
Required events cannot be accurately recorded or retainedReconstruction and manual-recording duties
Accurate logs remain available but will not transferTransfer troubleshooting and compliant display/print review

A saved document can still exist when a printer fails. In the same way, a failed transfer does not always mean the log was lost.

Check the affected period

Follow carrier and provider diagnostic instructions. Review the timeline after recovery. If there is a malfunction, follow its reporting and recording requirements in the next lesson.
