What your ELD records

Understand the digital trail and what an inspection can reveal.

LESSON 2 / 2 · Read the history, not just the graph

Read the history, not just the graph

Learn what an inspection record contains.

The graph is a summary

The duty graph shows how a day is divided between statuses. An officer can also review the underlying events: identities, certifications, login/logout activity, engine power events, diagnostics, annotations, and unidentified driving.

To understand a corrected day, read the original event and its correction history together.

Edits do not erase the original

A permitted edit keeps the original record and the correction history. It works like tracked changes in a document. The current version can be accurate while the history explains what changed.

A correction leaves a history

At a glance · Follow the sequence

  1. 01

    Original

    Fueling recorded off-duty

  2. 02

    Correction

    Accurate on-duty entry with explanation

  3. 03

    Inspection

    Original and correction history remain

Correct the description and leave a clear explanation of what changed.

Roadside review and retention are different

At roadside, provide the current day and previous seven days. Carriers retain ELD records for at least six months. An investigation can request older retained records.

Inspection mode shows the required logs. It does not automatically give an officer access to every fleet dashboard, camera system, or private app.
