Correct logs without rewriting history

Distinguish valid edits, driving restrictions, and carrier proposals.

LESSON 1 / 2 · Correct the description without changing the evidence

Correct the description without changing the evidence

Know the edit limits before making a correction.

What an edit can do

ELD edits correct inaccurate manual entries and add missing information. Each change needs an annotation: a factual note explaining what changed and why. The original record is preserved.

Automatically recorded driving generally cannot be shortened or changed to non-driving. Automatic location, login/logout, engine power, and malfunction events also have edit restrictions. An editor cannot make real activity disappear.

The type of error determines which correction process is available.

Choose the correct workflow

Common correction cases
RecordApproach
Fueling manually logged off-dutyCorrect the status and annotate
Missing load informationAdd accurate details
Automatically recorded drivingDo not reduce it or convert it to non-driving
Unidentified driving that belongs to the driverClaim it through the appropriate workflow
Qualifying team-driver misassignmentUse the narrow reassignment process; preserve total driving

Before editing, establish the actual task, person, and time. A fuel receipt alone does not prove which driver fueled or the exact work period.

Write a specific annotation

Make the fueling correction explainable

At a glance · Follow the sequence

  1. 01

    Find the mismatch

Fueling at 10:10–10:25 was marked off-duty

  2. 02

    Correct the status

    Use the permitted on-duty correction

  3. 03

    Explain the change

State the task, time, and reason; preserve the original

“Fixed log” leaves out the facts that make the correction reviewable.

A correction may reduce available hours or reveal a violation. Accuracy still comes first.
