34-hour restart & recap hours

Plan the rolling cycle without confusing it with daily rest.

LESSON 1 / 2 · Renew the rolling cycle with a restart

Renew the rolling cycle with a restart

Learn what the cycle counts and what a restart changes.

The sixty/seventy-hour cycle

The cycle limits driving after a total of sixty on-duty hours in seven consecutive days, or seventy in eight. Driving and on-duty not driving both count. Use sixty/seven when the carrier does not operate CMVs every day of the week; use seventy/eight when it does.

At least thirty-four consecutive hours of qualifying off-duty/sleeper rest can restart this cycle for property-carrying drivers. A ten-hour daily break renews daily limits, not the cycle. The longer limit prevents several busy days from adding up to too much work.

The restart must be a continuous qualifying rest period. Check its start and finish against actual work.

Complete the rest without work

A continuous restart

At a glance · Follow the sequence

  1. 01

    Friday, 8 p.m.

    The last work task ends

  2. 02

    34 uninterrupted hours

    Qualifying off-duty or sleeper rest

  3. 03

    Sunday, 6 a.m.

    The rolling cycle can restart

A required work task interrupts the rest. Count again when that work ends.

Use actual rest, not just the app’s predicted finish time. A work task cannot become rest by labeling it personal conveyance.

A restart is optional

The ordinary restart does not require two 1–5 a.m. periods or limit use to once in 168 hours. Those are older conditions. You can instead regain hours as old days leave the rolling cycle. The next lesson explains recaps.
