Build a fallback for a day that stops qualifying
Know which records are needed when short-haul conditions fail.
Record the whole day
If a short-haul condition fails, create RODS for the entire day, not just the part outside the radius. Keep the preceding seven days’ duty information available. Separately assess whether an ELD is required, including the eight-days-in-thirty exception.

01
New assignment
Recheck radius, return, and release conditions
02
Day no longer qualifies
Keep the required full duty record
03
Rolling 30 days
Recheck ELD eligibility against days requiring RODS
One changed day affects its records; repeated changed days can affect the recording method.
A changed assignment can affect today’s records and the recording method needed for future days.
Lost eligibility is not the same as over-hours driving
| Question | What to review |
|---|---|
| Does simplified recordkeeping apply? | Radius, return/release, rest, and records |
| Was driving over a limit? | Driving, window, cycle, and applicable exceptions |
| Is an ELD required? | ELD exceptions and rolling thirty-day RODS count |
Leaving the radius can remove the recording exception while driving hours remain. Staying inside it does not allow over-hours driving.
Prepare the fallback before dispatch
Have a way to record the full day and track RODS days. A separate sixteen-hour window exception does not preserve this short-haul rule’s fourteen-hour release condition.
